State Minimums: Is It Enough Coverage?

At Wren Insurance Agency, we want to help ensure you are adequately protected, not just getting by the skin of your teeth! When your life and others' lives are at stake, you don’t want to just have the “minimum” coverage, but rather the appropriate coverage.

What Is Minimum Coverage?

Minimum auto insurance coverage is the amount of insurance your state requires you to carry in order to legally drive a vehicle. In most cases, this is not enough to ensure that you are adequately protected from the financial and legal responsibilities that may result if you were involved in a traffic accident.

What Does Minimum Coverage Include?

The minimum coverage requirement varies from state to state. In Florida, we are a “no-fault state”. This means that if you are injured in an auto accident, your insurance company will pay out the first $10,000, subject to these caps:

  • 80% of your medical bills
  • 60% of your lost wages
  • And up to $5,000 for death benefit/burial costs

This "no fault" coverage of up to $10,000 is commonly referred to as "Personal Injury Protection", or PIP.

You are also required to carry $10,000 in Property Damage coverage (PD), which covers you if cause damage to others' property, such as their vehicle or a structure.

Is Minimum Coverage Enough?

It can be hard to say, but if you want to help keep yourself and your family protected financially and diminish gaps in coverage during a physical loss to your property or self, it may be time to review your automobile policy.
