How I Got Into Insurance

Whenever I meet fellow insurance professionals for the first time, I always ask them how they got into the insurance business. It’s a fun question because of the wide range of answers people share. The interesting thing is that no one has ever said “I have wanted to be an insurance agent ever since I was a little kid!”. Insurance just doesn’t seem capture the interest of children (or adults) like other professions do. Police officers, teachers, and professional athletes are all much higher on the list. So with that in mind, here is my story:

I was a 21 year old college student taking an entreprenurship course. The  course’s main project was to create a business plan for a fictitious company. I remember the professor’s suggestion to choose a business or product that meant something to us; maybe something based on a hobby or an interest.  At the time, my main hobby was spending time with my girlfriend and a key interest was getting her father to like me. My girlfriend’s father was an insurance agent, and so I thought doing the business plan for an insurance agency would be a great idea. It could give me an opportunity to ask him questions, to get to know him, and maybe even impress him a little bit. Looking back, I’m certain he saw right through it. That's okay though. He helped me a lot with the project (I got an A), and during the process he taught me a lot about insurance and business. My initial intention may not have been to learn about insurance, but along the way I discovered that it was a great way to help people, which is something that has always been important to me.

After I graduated, I worked for a finance company originating loans and selling life insurance. Some time later, Skip Wren asked me to join Wren Insurance Agency. He was the “girlfriend’s father” who previously  helped me. Because of my respect for Skip, and because I had since married into the family, it was an easy decision for me. Over the years, I learned a lot from my father-in-law, Skip Wren. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and I am fortunate to have worked alongside him in the agency for so many years. Looking back to when he helped me with that project, it’s funny to think about how much I’ve learned since then, and how much I’ve grown to love insurance.

Insurance may not be for everybody, but it’s definitely for me. Thanks for reading!
